CHRISTMAS WISH CHAPTER 2

I DUSTED OFF MY hair, and stepped up to Tanya’s little home, and sighed. Tanya wanted a big house on a hill like my parents had and said that someday, she’d marry a man of means. Unfortunately, she hadn’t been old enough to understand elves or what their idea of wealth was. Her parents were loving and kind, but they had passed just before Tanya turned sixteen.

I had helped her clean out the house and spruce it up in her own way. It shone with Christmas magic just like our house seemed to.

At least until she met and broke up with her first boyfriend. Then the glow of her house faded. With each breakup, it seemed to get darker, and now as I stood studying the outer walls, I blinked at the almost black patches sticking out from beneath the sticking snow.

She deserved better than this.

I took a breath and pushed down the sadness that overtook me before I clanked the knocker against the door three times. When the door opened, my oldest friend peered out. Her eyes were ringed in red and her cheeks blotchy from crying.

“Chrissy?” She blinked as if trying to correct her vision. “What are you doing here?”

I shuffled my feet. “My dad thought you might need a friend.” I offered her my best conciliatory smile. “And from the looks of you, I’m glad he called to let me know what was going on.”

Tanya sniffled and opened the door for me to come in out of the storm. I slid inside, and she closed the door before leading me into the kitchen, where she busied herself with making me a hot chocolate.

“What happened?” I made myself comfortable at one of the stools lining the pristine island and focused on her, ignoring the nagging thought of the job back in the city.

“He said he didn’t feel a connection with me.” She let out a laugh before she slathered my cup with whipped cream. She slid it across the island and made one for herself, too.

“And you did?” I took a sip. It was good, but not as good as the ones I make at my parents.

She shook the whipped cream can but paused at my question as the cocoa machine spit out her drink into the cup. Then she started shaking the canister again. She didn’t speak until her cup was adorned with what looked like half the container of cream. She slid into the seat next to me with a sigh.

“I don’t know.” She sipped the drink. “But it doesn’t matter because there are no more eligible elves. I’m destined to be alone and bitter for the rest of my life.” She sulked like a child and glanced at me. “How do you do it?”

I covered her hand with mine and raised an eyebrow. “Do what?”

“Live without someone to love?”

Oh. That. How do I find the words to explain that I didn’t need a man in my life to Tanya, who thrived on that thought? It took me a moment to formulate the words so they wouldn’t be offensive to her.
